The Nueces County medical examiner has identified the 18-year-old man whom a Corpus Christi police officer fatally shot at a Corpus Christi nightclub late Saturday night as Dwayne Earl Johnson.

At 1:33 a.m. on Sunday, Corpus Christi police say they were dispatched to The Ranch Dance Hall at 4563 Everhart Road, where an assault was in progress, according to a news release from the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers saw an assault taking place on the side of the O’Reilly’s at the corner of Everhart Road and Burney Drive, Corpus Christi Police Department Lt. Eryca Gonzalez said.

Call notes advised that a male subject was lying on the ground being assaulted and not moving. Officers saw the attacker, now identified as Johnson, pull out a handgun while he was positioned over the victim.

One of the police officers in the two-man unit fired his weapon, striking Johnson. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The 18-year-old assault victim was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The officer who shot Johnson was not injured and will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with the department’s policy.

The shooting prompted a response from the H. Boyd Hall Chapter of the NAACP, with the organization’s leaders holding a news conference Monday morning at its headquarters at 405 N. Tancahua St.

“We understand that there has been another shooting of a Black man by CCPD,” a news release from the NAACP states. “We have been in touch with the chief and have requested a thorough and independent investigation to ensure the truth of what happened is ultimately discovered.”

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting should call Corpus Christi Police Department detectives at 361-886-2840. Anonymous tips can be reported to Crime Stoppers at 361-888-TIPS (8477) online at cctexas.com/crimestoppers.
